Everyone likes an underdog story. If I would have know the story about California Chrome a little bit better I would have rooting for that thorough bred.  They did mention a very short blurb about California Chrome at the start of the race but I was thinking about Medal Count as my horse to root for. I confess it was the story behind his name that attracted me to him.

 

 

 

But after they elaborated on California chrome I was very happy for his victory.  He can from a mare worth $2,500 and a stallion worth $8,000.  In traditional racing circles the horses that run the Kentucky Derby and other similar races come from much more expensive parents. The idea being that they will have better more qualified horses to run the race.

 

 

 

Additionally, California Chrome was bred in California where most of the other racers are born and bred in Kentucky and surrounding areas.

Last night on a cable station that plays all western movies I saw for the first time a movie called "All The Pretty Horses" starring Matt Damon and Penelope Cruz. The setting was Texas and Mexico circa 1949-1950. It was a pretty successful movie and you can read about it on the Internet if you haven't seen it.

 

 

 

From my opinion it started off pretty good and had several scenes in the beginning with some excitement as Matt Damon's character and his friend ran into a younger guy on the run to Mexico. Then there was some horse herds which are always beautiful and astounding with all that horse flesh pounding on the ground and those majestic animals with their flowing manes running together...

 

 

 

There was a classic scene where the two buddies were breaking horses and then Matt Damon's character was riding some beautiful mares when he hooked up with Penelope Cruz's character.

 

 

 

Then there was the escape from Mexico and the ride back. Personally it was kind of a slow movie with the exception of the scenes I pointed out. I did however, have one thing in common throughout the movie that kept me interested, the pretty horses. I love movies with horses and this movie had a lot of horses!
