BEING A DISCIPLE OF CHRIST

Being a disciple of Christ can be a very easy thing to do in some situations and it can be a little difficult in other situations. For instance, look at the following passage of scripture from the Beatitudes:

Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. (Matthew 5:43-45)

We are told to love our enemies. I’m not talking about lip service. I’m talking about in the thick of the fight, love your enemies. Just after the Twin Towers fell and just after 9-11 when we heard that the Taliban were responsible for the terrorist attacks, could you say in your heart, I love the people of the Taliban.

The Beatitudes also tell us to bless them that curse you and do good to them that hate you. The terrorist hate us. They curse us by their acts or terror. Are you spiritually in a place to bless them and to do good to them? These hard questions will hopefully make us think about what this passage in the beatitudes is talking about. These examples are extreme. But they are valid. What do you think?
