Abide with Me; 'Tis Eventide

Abide with Me; 'Tis Eventide

1. Abide with me; 'tis eventide.
The day is past and gone;
The shadows of the evening fall;
The night is coming on.
Within my heart a welcome guest,
Within my home abide.

O Savior, stay this night with me;
Behold, 'tis eventide.
O Savior, stay this night with me;
Behold, 'tis eventide.

2. Abide with me; 'tis eventide.
Thy walk today with me
Has made my heart within me burn,
As I communed with thee.
Thy earnest words have filled my soul
And kept me near thy side.

3. Abide with me; 'tis eventide,
And lone will be the night
If I cannot commune with thee
Nor find in thee my light.
The darkness of the world, I fear,
Would in my home abide.
(
Lowrie M. Hofford)

This is a wonderful, soulful christian hymn. I only we could have The Savior stay the night with us...what peace that would bring to our soul. But we can have His spirit to be with us if we strive to keep His commandments, repent frequently and seek after Him.

I don't know if Lowrie Hofford was inspired to write this hymn by the verse found in the gospel of Luke or not but check out the verse.

"But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them." (Luke 24:39)

Jesus' disciples pleaded with Him and He consented to stay the night with them. What a blessing for them.  We are blessed with the Bible...It would be nice to be alive when Jesus was walking the dusty roads of Jerusalem. But we are not, so we have to be content with reading the Bible and learning of the Savior.
