What Affirmations Can and Can't Do

What Affirmations Can and Can't Do

Affirmations are powerful words, phrases, verses and stories that reinforce or reaffirmation attitudes and qualities within us. To determine what they can do we will first look at what they can't do. Then when we have the proper perspective of their limitations then we can see just how powerful they are.

If you search the Internet for affirmation related keywords and concepts, the books and tapes they try to sale will tell you that with the power of affirmations in your life you can do anything or be anything. This isn't true. Let's take a reality check.

I don't intend to offend anyone with these examples but let's consider a few examples that me be to obvious but make the point.

Conside a small person (Little People Big World is a favorite show of mine and shows what positive thinking can accomplish) but can a small person with the power of affirmations become a Quaterback for the NFL? No matter what the affirmation they try to use, it just won't happen.

Could someone confined in a wheel chair for the rest of there life ever how to play Major League Baseball? No.

Can a little girl grow up to be President of the United States? That is quite possible where it wouldn't have been heard of forty years ago.

So if your sitting in your wheel chair repeating the positive affirmation "I will be a NBA All Star" with all the conviction and belief possible you're wasting your time.

Now that we can see that not everything is possible with the power of positive affirmations, let's examine just how powerful they can be.

You're sitting in your hospital bed having been told that when they take the bandages off your eyes you may be blind for the rest of your life. Some would say that the power of positive self talk could help the body heal the eyes so you will be able to see. I won't take issue with that because I have been blessed to see many miracles in my life time.

Fast forward with our example and you come to find out your blind. The power of positive affirmations can make or break the power of your future. "I am strong", "I am a survivor", "I am at peace" etc. These types of affirmations will get you on the right track.

Fast forward a few months and you're learning brail or learning to work with a seeing eye dog. Positive affirmations can keep you motivated. They can help you achieve. They can keep you positive. With a positive attitude you can do almost anything, you can overcome almost anything.

But let us not forget that being at peace within yourself regardless of the trials and challenges you face physically or mentally, is a powerful and valuable thing. It's a great starting point.
